Intermediate Hand-building is the perfect next step for anyone who has completed an introductory ceramics course and is ready to expand their skills. Over six classes, you'll move beyond the fundamentals of pinch, coil, and slab construction, focusing on larger projects, cleaner craftsmanship, and more intentional design.

Together we'll explore precision slab building, expressive organic forms, advanced coil construction for larger vessels, and refined pinch techniques, all while developing a deeper understanding of structural integrity, wall thickness, compression, drying, and finishing. We'll also spend time learning how to make thoughtful glaze choices through layering and surface design to best complement your work.

Throughout the course, the emphasis is on slowing down, refining technique, and understanding why ceramics succeed or fail. Whether you're interested in creating functional ware or sculptural pieces, you'll leave with greater confidence, stronger technical skills, and a deeper appreciation for the craft.

Prerequisites: This course is intended for students who have completed an introductory hand-building course or who have equivalent previous hand-building experience.

Hand-building workshop

Saturdays starting November 7 from 1:00-4:00 pm 

You already know how to work with clay. Now let’s figure out what you want to do with it.

This 6-week guided studio program is designed for experienced hand-builders who want to push their work further with personalized instruction, feedback, and creative guidance.

Rather than following a set project each week, you’ll develop your own projects and ideas with support from Gage throughout the process. Bring a technique you want to improve, a project you’ve been struggling with, an idea you want to finally make, or simply a desire to develop your own artistic direction.

Each session combines independent studio time with demonstrations, troubleshooting, one-on-one guidance, and group discussion. We’ll look at construction techniques, form, proportion, surface, finishing, problem-solving, and artistic development, with the focus adapting to what each student is working toward.

This is a space to experiment, ask questions, make mistakes, and develop a more intentional relationship with your work.

**classes will be smaller, max 6 people**

Prerequisite: This course is not for beginners or for those who have only completed (1) multi-week intro course. Students should have a fundamental understanding of hand-building techniques and be comfortable working independently with clay.

Wheel-throwing workshop

$225 / 4 classes

Thursdays starting November 12 from 6:00-8:30 pm

Have you always wanted to try the pottery wheel? This 4-week course will introduce you to the basics of wheel-throwing in a friendly, low-pressure environment. You will learn how to centre the clay, open it up, pull up the walls, and shape your first pieces. 

Whether you are looking to discover a new craft or simply want to get your hands in some clay, this workshop is a great place to start!

No prior experience necessary.

Hand-building workshop

Tuesday December 1st and 7th 6:30-8:30 pm

Immortalize your four-legged companion with a handmade ceramic portrait! In this workshop, you will learn how to sculpt clay to create a pinch pot face of your pet to hang on the wall, personalizing it with their distinctive features, expressions, and unique little details. Whether you have a dog, a cat, or another beloved creature, you will leave with a one-of-a-kind wall decoration inspired by your best friend. 

Then, one week later, come back and paint it!

No prior experience is necessary. All materials and firing costs are included. Bring along a few photos of your pet for inspiration!

Ceramic painting workshop

Join us for a two-hour ceramic painting workshop! Personalize your own mug with colourful designs, playful details, or whatever your imagination comes up with. No experience necessary, just bring your creativity and enjoy a relaxed afternoon of making something uniquely yours.

Hand-building workshop

Sunday December 6 from 2:30-4:30 pm

Create a ceramic wall hanging designed to hold a tealight candle, small keepsakes, dried flowers, crystals, or other meaningful objects. 

Using slab-building techniques, you'll learn how to construct, assemble, and decorate your wall piece with textures, relief details, and sculptural elements. After the workshop, your piece will be dried, fired, glazed by us in your chosen glaze, and ready for pickup in a few weeks.

Perfect for: Beginners and anyone interested in starting ceramics. No prior clay experience is required.

We’ll cover drying, firing, glazing, and how to design work that balances structure and creativity.

A great place to start if you’re new to ceramics, returning after a break, or wanting to build confidence before moving into more themed workshops.
